Puretracks, an online music download service, has recently launched free-standing kiosks that will burn a CD for you of tunes you select. Just like at home, but you don't need your computer with you to do it. Future functionality improvements planned will include direct-to-player digital downloads through on-board ports. You can read a more detailed article at Business Edge (no sub rqd).
This is, in an odd sort of way, a long-tail idea. Some of the locations for the kiosks are record stores. The kiosk will permit them to add selection in specific categories and change the focus of their floor inventory.
I bet it works. People will keep buying music; they just don't want to buy it the way the music industry wants to sell it. Thank goodness that's changing.
